The Importance of Sunglasses

With the fabulous sunny weather we have had the last few summers, many of us have no doubt been checking out the trendy eyewear that our fellow Londoners have been shading their eyes with.  Whether you favour a designer label, or the super practical option of transition lenses, protecting your eyes from UV light is incredibly important.  Here is some advice about what to look for in your sunglasses, when to wear them, and why they are so important:

UV light can be harmful to your eyelids, cornea, lens and retina.  When choosing sunglasses, always look for a pair with 100% UV protection.  These don’t necessarily need to be expensive; designer glasses tend to be more expensive because of the frames.  In terms of eye protection, a pair of £10 sunglasses can be just as good, as long as they have that 100% UV protection.

Style is a very personal thing, but if you suit a wraparound style then always go for these, as they offer that extra protection compared to other styles.

Where possible, choose Polarised sunglasses which eliminate glare, which will be much more comfortable for your eyes, and will allow much better vision, even in very bright sunlight.

Don’t put your sunglasses away in a drawer when the summer ends.  Your eyes are vulnerable to damage from UV light whether it’s winter or summer, cloudy or sunny.  If you are in the snow, or near to a body of water this is especially important.  The reflected light from the water or snow adds to the UV light from the sun, making it doubly necessary to shade your eyes.

At Paine and Hunter we have a wide range of sunglasses to suit all lifestyles, budgets and tastes.  Come in and check out the range, or see the range we stock here.
